| MAY DAY CELEBRATIONS
May Day was celebrated annually at most local schools until the 1960s. At McIntire School, an elementary and high school combined, representatives of various grades participated in the May Court. These photographs show the May Queen and her attendants in front of McIntire School in 1950, when the school was separated from McIntire Park by Rugby Ave., which crossed the same path as the 250 Bypass does today.
The bottom two photos are of May Day celebrations (with May Pole) at Clarck Elementary School

At Ridge Lawn School, a private, progressive kindergarten at 400 Ridge Street, Mrs. Julia Yancey Alderman; principal of the school, used the spacious grounds surrounding the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Yancey, at 301 Ridge Street, for that school's May Day presentations.
