The Hatton Ferry, one of only two poled ferries still operating in the United States, runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. mid-April to mid-October.

A ride on the ferry is a unique opportunity to experience times past; ferries served Albemarle County from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, and provided a means by which European settlers could communicate with other settlers and establish commercial ventures.

The Hatton Ferry is jointly maintained and operated by the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, the County of Albemarle, and by the Virginia Department of Transportation. The Hatton Ferry website is maintained by Jeff Schmick of the James River Runners.

A small exhibit explores the history of the ferry, and visitors may ride across the river at no charge if water levels permit. The Hatton Ferry is located in southern Albemarle, a few miles outside of Scottsville on Route 625. For further information, call the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society at 296-1492
