TOURS OF HISTORIC ALBEMARLE COUNTY JAIL #5
Location: Court Square & Historic Albemarle County Jail #5
Date: Saturday, April 2nd, 10am and 12pm noon; Thursday, April 7th, 5:30pm ; Saturday, April 9th, 10am
Cost: $6/person online and day of event; $5/person in person before event
For a limited time the first week in April, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society will be offering a unique opportunity to tour Historic Albemarle County Jail #5 as a part of their regular Court Square Walking Tours. The jail, located just off East High Street, was closed in 1974. Since that time, it has sat in virtual abandonment. The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society has been working for the past year to develop a plan to preserve and reopen the jail as a museum of local history. These special tours will serve as the opening fundraiser for ACHS' jail restoration efforts. Since the jail has been closed for over four decades now, this is the chance of a generation for many Charlottesville and Albemarle residents.
Tours will be offered on April 2 and April 9 at 10:00am, April 2 at 12pm noon, and on April 7 at 5:30pm. Each tour will last approximately 90 minutes. Visitors of all ages are welcome and encouraged to come.
Since this is such an extraordinary and limited event, we advise visitors to purchase tickets prior to the event. Tickets can be purchased from albemarlehistory.org for $6/person, or by stopping by the McIntire Building at 200 Second Street to purchase tickets for a discounted rate of $5/person. Tickets will be available the day of the event for $6/person, but we highly recommend pre-purchases.
