1857 Memorial Fund Award

Upon the dissolution of their philanthropic organization, the Virginia 1857 Fund donated their assets to ACHS with the request that this money be used to encourage the study, recording and preser-vation of the history of Charlottesville and Albemarle County by students and faculty members at the University of Virginia.

Rules for Submissions:
1. The competition is open to all current students and faculty of the University of Virginia.
2. All submissions must be original to the contributor and never before published in any similar form, or under simultaneous consideration by another publication. The author(s) will sign a statement granting publication rights to ACHS.
3. Submissions must rely to the extent possible on primary sources rather than published works.*
4. The inclusion of images with article publication is strongly encouraged. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from proper authori-ties to reproduce any images.
5. Most manuscripts should not exceed 5000 words. Sharply focused items of 500 - 1500 words are invited. Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced with a traditional font, size 12. Endnotes should be used, and all references will follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
6. All manuscripts will be received by the editor of the Magazine of Albemarle County History for possible inclusion in that journal in accordance with its normal selection and editing proce-dures. Please visit the ACHS website for more information concerning MACH submissions.

How to Apply
1. Manuscripts must be submitted in electronic form as email attach-ments or on disk in a program compatible with Microsoft Word. If illustrations are included, they should be in the form of digital scans or photocopies. Do not send original photographs or artwork.
2. Proof of affiliation with the University of Virginia will be required, via a scanned or photocopied image of a student or faculty ID.
3. The Application for 1857 Fund Award must be completed and submitted in electronic form.

5. All those who submit entries will be notified of the contest outcome in January 15, 2013.
