03. The Businessman
In 1880, Mr. McIntire moved to Chicago, Illinois to work as a coffee salesman with his brother-in-law, Samuel Baker.18 Baker was an important merchant, involved with the tobacco trade and the Spaulding and Merrick Tobacco Company.19
Mr. McIntire arrived during a tumultuous time in Chicago’s history, which is particularly evident in the Haymarket Riot in 1886.20 During this event, upset workers disobeyed the orders of police officers and rallied for an 8-hour work day.21 This riot turned violent when a bomb exploded, resulting in the deaths of eight police officers and the wounding of 67 people.22
It was throughout this turbulent era in Chicago that Mr. McIntire first achieved his stock market success.23 In 1896, he purchased his seat on the Chicago Stock Exchange.24 Mr. McIntire had a career as a commission broker, specialized in rail stocks and also partook in personal trading.25 In the midst of his blossoming career, Mr. McIntire married Edith Clark in 1891.26 He was 31-years-old at the time.27
Five years after joining the Chicago Stock Exchange, Mr. McIntire moved to New York and applied to the New York Stock Exchange.28 When Mr. McIntire first arrived to Chicago, he had very little wealth.29 However, by the time he wanted to purchase a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1901, he had two eager sponsors, George A. McClellan and J.J. Townsend, and a personal check for $10,000.30 His first New York offices were located at 71 Broadway.31 By 1918, he had moved to Wall Street.32
Also in 1901, Mr. McIntire welcomed the birth of his only child, Charlotte Virginia.33
Mr. McIntire left active business in 1918 and retired to Charlottesville, Virginia.34 During his retirement, Mr. McIntire gave numerous contributions to his hometown and to the University of Virginia.
