Cavalier Ladies 1948 Baby Show

The Cavalier Ladies, a social organization made up of wives of University of Virginia students, had their 2nd Annual Baby Show on the Lawn, on May 18, 1948. President and Mrs. Colgate Darden headed the committee of judges.

The general public was invited and spectators had seats on the Rotunda steps. Proceeds from the show went to the Rucker Home for Convalescent Children. Quiescent during World War II, the Cavalier Ladies was reorganized in 1946. A major activity of the club was participating in various civic fund raisers, to benefit particularly the Community Chest and the Red Cross.

Approximately 600 babies were paraded. Prizes were awarded for the “best” and the “most.” It was advertised that the prize for “most” babies would automatically go to a couple with 5 children provided they showed up with all their youngsters.
