Introduction: Downtown—Architecture and Landscape of a Community

This exhibit was researched and organized by Daniel Bluestone, Professor of Architectural History and Preservation at the University of Virginia, along with graduate students from his year-long Community History course at the School of Architecture from Fall 2008 - Spring 2009. Beginning with the town’s roots as a court center and county seat, the exhibit examines many aspects of downtown throughout the years up to the present. Students focused on a wide range of issues including but not limited to: commerce, transportation, housing, entertainment, dining, parks and public space, Vinegar Hill urban renewal, and Lawrence Halprin’s Pedestrian Mall. The exhibit brings to light a complex network of historical factors that contribute to the urban environment of downtown Charlottesville today.

This exhibit is currently on display in the Historical Society’s lobby at McIntire Building.  You can come in to view it yourself or check it out online!
