Lt. Pavlick, Col. Stapler making awards--"Two men that were enlisted when we arrived there were elevated with field commissions. They were made lieutenants, for several reasons. Officers were often killed, along with everybody else, so there was often a shortage and non-officers that had distinguished themselves in leadership or whatever up to that point might be eligible to get what they called a field commission. That's what's going on in this picture where the battalion commander, Colonel Stapler, is pinning the awards on these people."
