"We would get a hold of a jeep and go cruising through the countryside and see what we could see. It was a beautiful spring that year. We would meet people, which was illegal--to fraternize with the Germans--but we didn't worry too much about that. We were always wanting eggs for some reason or another, and the standard price for a fresh egg was a cigarette, which was the currency everybody used in occupied Germany."
