Vinegar Hill after “renewal,” looking west, Jefferson School (black) in background, McGuffey School (white) in foreground. Vinegar Hill is in this photo a vacant expanse, a field of grass. It remained largely vacant for almost 20 years.

this dates from the late 60’s after Ridge McIntire Road was opened. The only building on its east side(300 Preston Ave)was constructed by O’Neill Enterprises(who also owned Willoughby)Jefferson School was the 6th grade school for the entire city. McGuffey had been intergrated in 1964 and half was used as extra classrooms for Lane High. Briefly used for special education, then storage and it became the Arts Center in 1975. The winter before R-M Road opened there was a heavy snow. My friend Charles Pappas(206 Market St)was walking up Main Street to my house and fell into a hole(for a light pole)that was covered with a thin piece of plywood. Luckily I got there very soon after and pulled him out. We sledded where the road is, it was much steeper because it didn’t have it finial grading
