Image date: 1975

The scene in the photograph was the result of a 1975 snow storm. The McGuffey Arts Center took over the building in 1996. The building opened in 1916 as the city’s white elementary school. William Holmes McGuffey, editor of the McGuffey Readers was the building’s namesake.  The building is done in the colonial revival style.  Received by the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society on February 23, 1995 from the sister of the photographer, Miss Evelina Magruder, in a two volume collection of photos, known as the Alaville Magruder Collection.

I attended grade school there from 1960 to 1965. The Arts Center was in the building in the early 80’s, I volunteered in their shop. The partial view of a house on the right is in fact the Magruder sister’s home.
