Image date: 1940s and 1950s

Description:

This is a black and white photograph that shows the Carver Inn and other buildings and homes along Commerce Street. The Carver Inn (located on the right) was located on the old Albemarle and Commerce Streets near Downtown Charlottesville. It looks as if the street is about to be laid in front of the Carver Inn. The Carver Inn was a blacks hotel and restaurant during the 1940s and 1950s. This photograph is from the Holsinger Collection at the University of Virginia.

I think this is Preston Avenue just west of the railroad overpass. The street has been considerably regraded since this photo was taken. The two-story house on the right was a boarding house/hotel for African Americans.
