Description:

The buildings shown are the brick buildings that were attached to the Colonial Hotel and later demolished for the Monticello Hotel. There is a brick chimney on top of each of the three sections. The windows and doors are all framed and the windows in the second and third stories are all evenly spaced. A car is parked in front of the middle building and also the fountain for horses stands outside of the center building, but across the street. There are four figures in the photograph; a person sitting in the car, a woman in white with an umbrella, a man in front of the building near a flat bed wagon, and a child walking towards the buildings. There are two trees in the photograph. On the building to the far right of the photograph, a ghost sign can be seen saying “Court Square…” The photo was taken by Allen Perkins.  The buildings that once stood on the South Side of Court Square were demolished for the Monticello Hotel, which is now 500 Court Square.  Received by the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society on February 23, 1995 from the sister of the photographer, Miss Evelina Magruder, in a two volume collection of photos, known as the Alaville Magruder Collection.
