Rip's 1940s: ZANADU, BEFORE AND AFTER
The Zanadu Beauty Shop, at 106 2nd Street, N.E., hired Rip Payne to photograph the interior of Zanadu before and after it was remodeled in 1946. The vinyl that replaced the wood had the advantage of being flame-resistant, as well as corrosive-resistant. In 1946, the sudden availability of building materials rationed during World War II, as well as the versatility of new synthetic materials developed during the war, led several downtown businesmen to use them while the prices were low. |
