Biographical/Historical Information: The Virginia Constitution of 1902 required voters to pay a poll tax or pass a literacy test prior to casting their ballot in an effort to disenfranchise African Americans without violating the 14th and 15th Amendments. Poll taxes in Virgina remained in effect until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed.
Scope and Content: This is a collection of ledgers that list the citizens of the City of Charlottesville who paid poll taxes from 1955-56 and 1958-65.
Arrangement: Each ledger lists names alphabetically and the ledgers in the box are arranged chronologically.
