Biographical/Historical Information: The United Confederate Veterans (UCV) was formed June 10, 1889, and served as a non-military, educational, social, and historical association concerned with the welfare of its members. The John Bowie Strange Camp of Confederate Veterans associated as the Charlottesville and Albemarle County chapter of the UCV and the Grand Camp of Confederate Veterans of Virginia.
Scope and Content: The collection is composed of the minutes of the meetings of the John Bowie Strange Camp of Confederate Veterans of Albemarle County, Virginia, from its inception on August 6, 1889, through June 27, 1910. The collection is a manuscript but also contains typed letters and news articles. Among the actions of the Camp reflected are the identification of members' deaths with a detailed obituary and place of burial; the purchase of burial plots for deceased members; the removal of veterans from one burial site to another site; political efforts to suppress "Yankee School Histories" in Virginia; the efforts and restriction of efforts to erect an equestrian statute of Thomas Jackson at the University of Virginia, 1897-1898; and the participation in the erection of a Confederate monument at the Albemarle County Courthouse Square in 1905.
