Biographical/Historical Information: Philena Carkin was a teacher in Charlottesville, Virginia during Reconstruction. Carkin's journals were bound into a manuscript describing her daily work as a teacher, the military occupation of Charlottesville, the University of Virginia and its students, and fellow teachers.
Scope and Content: The collection consists of a copy of the thesis (Ph.D) and two partial extracts from the dissertation. Both extracts feature the writings of Philena Carkin.
