Biographical/Historical Information:

Dr. Charles D. Everett (1806-1877) was the son of John Denny Everett and Alice Harrison Everett. Born in Kentucky, he lived with his uncle, Dr. Charles D. Everett ( -1848), of Belmont in Albemarle County, Virginia. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and opened a practice in Philadelphia. His uncle Charles D. Everett left him his entire Belmont estate at his death in 1848.

Everett married Mary Kate Coleman in 1852. They had ten children: Alice Kate (1852), Mary Coleman (1854), Clara (1856), Louise Montague (1858), Charles Edward (1860), John Coleman (1862), Alylett Lee (1864), Hester Hawed (1866), Joseph William (1869), and Alice Harrison (1871).

Joseph W. Everett (1869-1926) was the superintendent of Albemarle County Schools. He was also editor of the Virginia Journal of Education.

Scope and Content: The majority of the collection are family letters written by Joseph W. Everett about his visits to county schools during his tenure as superintendent. Other letters of note were written by Gertrude and Amélie Rives of Castle Hill. Also in the collection are three cartes de visite of Charles Everett, Gertrude Rives, and Amélie Rives.
