Biographical/Historical Information:
John Riley Phillips (1839-1894) was born in Barbour County, West Virginia. He was a captain in Co. K, 31st Virginia Infantry during the Civil War. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness and received treatment at the hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Phillips’ diary was published in The Barbour Democrat, July – November 1968 under the title “History of Valley Furnace.”
Scope and Content: This is a typescript excerpt of Capt. John R. Phillips' diary from April 1864 to July 1864. This section describes his recovery at the Charlottesville hospital.
