Biographical/Historical Information: Harriet Matthews (1807-1882) was a widow who lived in Charlottesville. Her husband, Richard Matthews, was a silversmith. William G. Wright (1832-1885) was, according to the 1880 census, the jailer in Charlottesville. In 1876 he rented a home from Matthews.
Scope and Content: This is the 1876 rental agreement between Matthews and Wright for the home Wright rented from Matthews. It was located near George B. Young's property. The donor included a note stating that the item was given to her by the daughter of William Wright, who lived at 213 7th Street N.E., in Charlottesville.
