Biographical/Historical Information: At the end of the Civil War, Union cavalry under the command of Philip H. Sheridan occupied Charlottesville from March 3 to March 6, 1865. Birdwood Plantation, located west of Charlottesville, was owned by the Garth family during the Civil War. Ada Pyne Bankhead's grandfather was William D. Garth, who built the house at Birdwood around 1830.
Scope and Content: This collection contains the memoir by Ada Pyne Bankhead about Sheridan's Raid at Birdwood estate in 1865. Included in the collection is a typescript copy of a transmittal letter from Ada Pyne Bankhead to [Hollis] Rinehart, 2 September 1923, and a TSL from Jack Rinehart to Mrs. J. Rawlings Thomson, 22 April 1982, sending Bankhead's letter and narrative.
