Biographical/Historical Information: Albemarle and Nelson Counties in Virginia became the center of America's soapstone quarrying industry in the late 19th century. The industry was centered around the town of Schuyler, where the Alberene Soapstone Company employed more than 1500 workers. The Alberene Railroad was chartered by the state in 1895.

Scope and Content: This is a collection of two typed accounts of Virginia's soapstone industry in Albemarle and Nelson Counties, and the shortline railroads that served them, written by Garth G. Groff.
